How to Use Your Mindset to Create the Life You Actually Want: A Practical Guide

If someone looked at your schedule right now, your daily routine, the apps on your screen time report, how you spend your evenings, what you consume when nobody is watching, would they be able to tell that your mindset has changed?

If someone looked at your schedule right now, your daily routine, the apps on your screen time report, how you spend your evenings, what you consume when nobody is watching, would they be able to tell that your mindset has changed?

Because here is the truth: a renewed mind that has not been deployed is just potential sitting in packaging.

This month, we have been on a journey together. In the first post of this series, I showed you the loop — why you keep repeating the same patterns, and why it is not a willpower problem but a subconscious programming problem.

In the second post, we looked at three specific habits that actually rewire the way you think, using Sara Blakely’s story as proof.

And in the third post, I handed you a framework for interrogating the thoughts running your mind, asking “Who said that?” so you could separate what is truly yours from what was planted in you by other people’s fears, limitations, and opinions.

If you have been following along, your mind is in a different place now. It is clearer. Lighter. More intentional.

But clarity without direction is not enough to make progress.

So today, I want to answer the question I know many of you are asking:

“My mind feels different but how do I use my mindset to create the life I want?”

And I am not going to answer it with theory. I am going to answer it with something I have lived through.

Before Winnie’s School of Excellence existed, before the courses and the masterclasses and the community you are now a part of, I built something else. I built a brand called Zeelicious Foods from nothing but a burning desire, a clear vision, and the principles I am about to share with you.

I was working in the oil industry at the time. Good company. Respectable salary. But something in me was deeply unfulfilled. I had this burning desire to cook, to create, to showcase Nigerian and African food to the world in a way that was excellent and beautiful.

And that desire would not leave me alone. I would find myself browsing food blogs and recipes, watching cooking content, studying creators, sometimes even during office hours. My mind was already somewhere else.

When I eventually took the leap of faith to leave and build Zeelicious Foods, I did not just “wing” it.

I applied every single principle I am about to teach you. And those principles did not just help me build a YouTube channel, they helped me build a brand that now has over a million subscribers, partnerships with multinational companies and a platform that reaches the world.

I tell you this not to impress you but to show you: a renewed mind, properly directed, is the most powerful tool you will ever hold.

Here are the five principles you can use to create the life you want.

Later in this post, I am going to give you something I created to help you put these principles into practice every single day — a free tool that keeps your vision right in front of your eyes.

1. The Power of Vision and Mission: Know Exactly What You Want

Everything begins here.

You cannot hit a target you have not defined. And you cannot build a life you have not first seen in your mind.

Yet this is what so many people try to do. They say they want change, they want growth, they want “more”, but when you ask them “More of what, specifically?” they cannot tell you.

That vagueness is not humility. It is a setup for failure.

When I decided to build Zeelicious Foods, I did not just say “I want to cook.” I said: I want to showcase Nigerian and African cuisine to the world with style and excellence.

That was not a wish. That was a mission. And it became the lens through which I filtered every single decision, what content to create, what partnerships to accept, what to say no to, how to present every single plate of food that appeared on camera.

This is what I want you to do right now: write a mission statement for your life. Not a paragraph. Not a journal entry. One sentence.

Here is the structure:

“I am building [what] by [how] so that [why], and I will achieve [specific milestone] by [when].”

That sentence becomes your filter. From today, every action you take, every opportunity that comes your way, every demand on your time, you hold it up against that sentence and ask:

“Is this for or against my vision?”

If it is for it, move.

If it is against it, decline — graciously, firmly, and without guilt.

I wrote about this extensively in my post on how to discover your life purpose and in the Duolingo Effect goal-setting framework if you have not read those yet, they will give you the full picture. But the starting point is this:

You need to be able to articulate exactly what you are trying to achieve, how you intend to achieve it, and when. Not “someday.” Not “when things fall into place.” When.

A vision without a deadline is a daydream.

2. The Power of Focus: Overfeed Your Vision, Starve Your Distractions

Let me tell you something that most people get wrong about focus.

They think focus is a gift. That some people are just wired to concentrate and the rest of us are not. That is a lie.

Focus is a skill. It can be learned. It can be trained. And the way you train it is unglamorous but effective:

You bring your mind back to the subject matter over and over and over again, regardless of how many times it wanders.

That is it…

Every focused person you admire gets distracted. Every single one

The difference between them and someone who never finishes anything is not that they are immune to distraction, it is that when the distraction presents itself, they pull their thoughts back intentionally and willingly to their object of focus.

While you, and I say this with love, indulge in the distraction:

You pick up the phone. You open the app. You doom scroll for forty-five minutes, binge-watch the Netflix series, and then wonder where the day went.

The cure to distraction is not to obsess over the distraction. The cure to distraction is to overfeed your focus.

Feed your vision so aggressively, so consistently, so relentlessly that the distractions cannot compete. Make your goal so loud in your mind that the noise of everything else fades to a whisper.

Warren Buffett once said: “The difference between successful people and really successful people is that really successful people say no to almost everything.”

For every “yes”, focused people have had to say no to 99 other good things

Not bad things — good things. Opportunities that would be perfectly fine for someone who does not have a specific vision. But you do. And good is often the worst enemy of best.

When I was building Zeelicious Foods, I went on YouTube to research who the biggest and best food content creator was. I found her and I studied everything:

The content quality,

the presentation,

the consistency.

I used her as a pattern, a benchmark for what excellence looked like in that space. And then I started creating. I did not have the best equipment. I did not have a team or a studio. But I was focused on making sure that every single video was the most excellent version of what I could produce with what I had.

I was not waiting for perfection. I was focused on excellence.

And that focus, that refusal to scatter my energy across a hundred different interests, is what made the channel take off.

The problem with some people is this: they say they want to achieve something, but then they put in the kind of effort that looks like throwing seeds on concrete and expecting a harvest.

No tilling. No watering. No tending. Just a lazy scatter and a sincere belief that “something” will grow.

They spend more time doom-scrolling on social media than they spend studying what it would actually take to reach their goal. And yet somehow, sincerely, they believe that the result will miraculously appear.

It does not work that way. It has never worked that way.

This is not me telling you to never have fun or never enjoy life. This is me telling you:

For this season, while you are building, while you are becoming, reduce your distractions to negative zero.

The entertainment can wait. The group chat that goes nowhere can wait. The series that everyone is watching can wait. Your vision cannot.

3. The Power of Environment: What You Consume Shapes What You Create

Now here is where most people think I am going to say “quit your job and chase your dream.” Nope, that’s not always the path for everyone.

What I am going to say is this:

What you feed your mind daily determines what your mind produces.

Even while I was still at the oil company, before I resigned, before Zeelicious Foods was a channel or a brand or anything the public could see, I was already living in my vision.

I was watching food content. Browsing recipes. Studying creators who were where I wanted to be. Reading everything I could get my hands on about food content, presentation, the business of cooking. My body was at a desk in the oil industry, but my mind was already in the kitchen.

I was engineering my mental environment before my physical environment changed.

And this is the principle:

Your environment, what you see, read, watch, and listen to daily, either builds or erodes your vision.

If your consumption does not match your destination, your results will not match your expectations.

So let me ask you:

What does your screen time actually look like?

What is on your feed?

What do you watch when you have a free hour?

Because if you spend more time consuming entertainment than you spend consuming knowledge, strategy, and inspiration related to your goal, your mind is being fed the wrong diet.

Here is what I want you to do:

Put your vision at the centre of your daily visual field.

Create a vision board. Put it where you will see it every single morning before your feet touch the floor.

Change your phone lock screen to an image that represents where you are going so that every time you reach for your phone to doom scroll, you are confronted with your own vision first.

Set your laptop wallpaper to the same. Put it on your TV screen. Let it be the thing that greets you and the thing that sends you to sleep.

And here is something powerful that did not exist five years ago:

You can now use AI tools to create a vision movie of yourself, a short visual of the future you are building, with your face in it, set to music that moves you.

I will be sharing a guide on exactly how to do this in another post.

Put Your Vision Where Your Eyes Already Are

You check your phone over 90 times a day. What if every single time, your vision was the first thing that greeted you — not notifications, not social media, not someone else’s highlight reel? I created a free Vision Board Wallpaper Pack — a template you can customise with your own goals, images, and mission statement in under five minutes. Replace the doom scroll with a daily reminder of exactly where you are headed.

This is not just motivation. This is neuroscience.

In the first post of this series, you learned about neuroplasticity, how your brain physically rewires itself based on what you repeatedly think, see, and do. When you put your vision in front of your eyes daily, when you consume content aligned with where you are going, when you engineer your environment to reinforce your goal, you are literally building new neural pathways.

You are retraining your brain’s default settings. Do this consistently and you will find yourself thinking in the direction of your vision by default, without having to force it.

That is the power of the environment. Not just “where you live” but what you allow to live in your mind.

4. The Power of Confession and Declaration: Speak It Before You See It

This is where I need you to lean in, because what I am about to say will separate you from every generic “positive affirmations” post you have ever read.

There is a difference between an affirmation and a declaration.

An affirmation says: “I am enough.” And while that is lovely, it is vague. It does not build anything.

A declaration says: “I am building a platform that will reach 10,000 people by December. I have the skill, the discipline, and the favour of God to make it happen. And I declare that no weapon formed against this vision shall prosper.”

Do you see the difference?

One is a comfort. The other is a blueprint spoken into existence.

The scripture says it plainly:

“Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee: and the light shall shine upon thy ways” (Job 22:28, KJV).

That word “decree” is not passive. It is not hopeful. It is authoritative. It is a declaration made with the full weight of your faith, your intention, and your identity behind it.

This is what I mean by confession:

Daily, intentionally, out loud, declare what it is you are building, what you want to see in your reality.

Speak the Word of God over your specific situation. Specific promises applied to specific goals.

What has God said about provision for the work of your hands? What has He said about wisdom for those who ask? What has He said about doors that He opens that no one can shut?

Speak those scriptures over your vision by name, every single day. At minimum, once a day. Because when you decree it consistently, heaven and earth begin to organise themselves around what you have spoken.

But here is the part most people miss, and this is critical:

It is not enough for your mouth to say it.

Your mind, your heart, your words, and your actions must all be on the same wavelength.

There is a scripture in Genesis 11:6 that has always struck me.

It is the story of the Tower of Babel. The people decided to build a tower to heaven, and God looked down and said:

“Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.”

Read that again. God Himself said that when people are one, unified in mind, heart, language, and action, nothing they imagine will be impossible for them.

Now apply that to you. Not a group of people. You.

When you become one within yourself — when your mind, your heart, your words, and your actions are all saying the same thing, pointing in the same direction, pursuing the same vision with zero contradiction, nothing you imagine to do will be restrained from you.

The problem is that most people are internally divided.

Their mouth says “I am going to build this business” but their heart is elsewhere.

Their words say “I believe I can do it” but their actions say “I don’t think I can.” Their mind sets a goal but then gets distracted by fear, doubt, and a hundred unrelated pursuits.

They are not one. They are fragmented. And fragmented effort produces fragmented results.

Now, notice I did not say your emotions must be aligned.

Emotions are unstable. They vacillate. They were never designed to sit in the driver’s seat of your life, they were meant to be passenger princesses, following wherever you choose to go.

You do not wait for your emotions to agree before you move. You move, and your emotions catch up. Some days you will feel inspired. Some days you will feel nothing. You move anyway, because your mind, heart, words, and actions have already settled the matter.

So here is my challenge to you — and I want you to take this seriously.

Set one goal that you will accomplish in the next seven days. Not thirty days. Not “by the end of the year.” Seven days.

Make it specific. Make it measurable. And then align everything behind it.

Your mind says it. Your heart believes it. Your words declare it. Your actions prove it. Leave no room for maybes.

It could be: “I am going to study [this subject] for six hours this week, one hour every day between 10am and 11am, and by Sunday I will take a test to measure what I have learned.”

Or: “I am going to complete my business plan by Friday at 6pm and submit it to [this person / this opportunity] before the weekend.”

Or: “I am going to have three specific conversations this week with people who are already where I want to be.”

Whatever it is be one about it. Let every part of you agree. And watch what happens when you stop self-sabotaging your goals.

Your Vision Should Be the Last Thing You See Before You Sleep and the First Thing You See When You Wake Up

You have just learned how to align your mind, heart, words, and actions on the same wavelength. Now engineer your environment to match. Download the free Vision Board Wallpaper Pack — an editable phone template where you place your goals, your mission statement, and the images of the life you are building right in front of your eyes, every single day. When you decree it and see it daily, heaven and earth begin to organise themselves around your vision.

5. The Power of Massive Action: Win Today

I want to close with the principle that ties everything together. Because vision without action is fantasy. Focus without movement is meditation. Declaration without execution is noise.

At some point, you have to move.

When I started Zeelicious Foods, I did not wait until I had the perfect setup. I did not wait until I could afford professional equipment. I did not wait until “the time was right.” I researched what I needed to know. I studied the best in the space. And then I started creating with what I had — focused on excellence, not perfection.

Within a year, YouTube awarded me the Silver Play Button. Today, Zeelicious Foods has over a million subscribers.

But here is what people see from the outside: The milestones, the awards, the brand deals…

What they do not see is what I used to tell my team every single day:

“Define what a successful day looks like. And as long as it is up to you, win that day!”

That is the principle of massive action. It is not about grinding yourself into exhaustion. It is not about hustle culture or sleeping four hours a night. It is about this:

Your old schedule was built by your old mind. A new mind requires a new schedule.

So redesign your schedule. Research and find out what you need to know, to learn, to study, and become skilled at to reach your ultimate goal.

Then restructure your day around it. Do not wait until you “have time.” You will never “have time.” Create the time. Rearrange your priorities. And go.

Focus on winning the goals you set today. Not the finish line six months from now, today’s finish line.

Because here is what I learned building Zeelicious: if you set a goal to complete something by 6pm, and 6pm comes and it is not done, you do not shrug and say “I will try again tomorrow.” You stay. You push. Even if you finish at midnight, you finish. You’ve won the day.

Wake up tomorrow and do it again. And the next day. And the next.

And when that becomes a habit, when winning the day becomes your default, when meeting your own deadlines becomes non-negotiable, something extraordinary happens.

One morning, you’ll lift your head and realise you have crossed the finish line you set months ago. Not because you were obsessed with it every day, but because you were obsessed with winning today every day. And all those days compounded into something remarkable.

The Bridge: Your Mind Is Ready — Now Build the Map

This month, you have done the foundation work.

You diagnosed the loop that was keeping you stuck. You practised the habits that rewire your thinking

You interrogated the thoughts that were never yours. And today, you learned the five principles that convert a renewed mind into a changed life: vision, focus, environment, declaration, and massive action.

Your mind is renewed. Your mission is clear. Your focus is trained. Your mouth is speaking what you are building. And you are taking intentional actions towards your goals.

But there is a next step and it is a critical one.

Everything I have shared with you this month lives under the first pillar of my transformation framework: Mindset

But Mindset is only the foundation. What comes next is Mapping how to take your vision and turn it into a strategic, step-by-step plan for your life. Mapping will teach how to have a vision for your life, how to execute your vision, in what order, with what resources, and through what stages.

In my next post, we will explore the next pillar of the Winnie’s School of Excellence transformation framework: Mapping.

And I promise you, if you thought this month was transformational, wait until you see what a clear mind can do with a clear plan.

FAQ

How do I turn a positive mindset into real results?

A positive mindset alone does not produce results — a directed mindset does. The five principles covered in this post: vision, focus, environment, declaration, and massive action, are the practical framework for converting inner change into outer transformation. Start by writing a one-sentence mission statement and aligning your daily actions to it.

What is the connection between mindset and goal setting?

Your mindset determines the quality of your goals. A mind still running on old programming will set goals that are safe, familiar, and comfortable. A renewed mind sets goals that belong to who you are becoming — not who you used to be. When your thinking changes, your goals should change too. If they have not, your old mind is still driving.

Can your mindset really change your life?

Yes — but only if it is deployed. A renewed mind that does not change your decisions, your schedule, your environment, and your daily actions is not truly renewed. The mindset is the foundation, not the house. You still need to build. The principles in this post show you how.

How do I stay focused when building toward a big goal?

Focus is not a gift — it is a trainable skill. The method is to bring your thoughts back to your goal every time they wander, without judging yourself for the wandering. Engineer your environment to support your focus: change your screens, curate your consumption, and say no to good things that are not the best thing for you right now. The cure to distraction is not starving the distraction — it is overfeeding your focus.
